VeloLiberty. Day Twenty-Three. Lake Balaton
Today, my journey brought me to the picturesque shores of Lake Balaton — the largest lake in Central Europe, often called Hungary’s “inland sea.” It’s a beautiful mix of nature, old fishing villages, and well-kept resort towns.
Balaton is not only a popular holiday destination but also a reflection of life in the Hungarian countryside. There’s a calm, cozy atmosphere here, free from unnecessary hustle. The people are friendly, and prices are much more reasonable than in tourist capitals.
I was especially impressed by the cycling infrastructure. The route around the lake — Balaton körút (Route 1) — is Hungary’s most popular national cycling trail. The quality is outstanding: smooth pavement, clear markings, signs, and convenient rest stops. Additionally, part of the route overlaps with the pan-European EuroVelo 14, making Balaton an important landmark on Europe’s cycling map.
I continue my VeloLiberty ride, gathering new impressions and observing the contrasts between former socialist countries and Western Europe. Lake Balaton has become another memorable stop on this map of experiences.
