VeloLiberty. Day Thirteen. Mauthausen

Day Thirteen. May 11, 2025
Vienna — Mauthausen

Today, I took a slight detour from my cycling route and made a short pause in my journey to visit Mauthausen. This year marks 80 years since the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp.

The official ceremony gathered the President and Chancellor of Austria, the King of Spain, and delegations from dozens of countries across Europe and beyond. Veterans, relatives of former prisoners, representatives of Jewish, Roma, and other communities. It’s a terrifying place, and the atmosphere here remains heavy, even after 80 years. The stone barracks, the crematorium ovens, the execution wall all of it has been preserved as a stark reminder of what humanity is capable of.

With each passing year, there are fewer and fewer witnesses to these events, but the memory must remain. Every corner of Europe carries its own tragic pages of history and Mauthausen is one of the darkest among them.
